The Tale of 4 Gamers - Hobbit SBG. My army will be the army of the last king of Arnor....

Army of Arnor.

The idea of this tale is to build from scratch a brand new 700 point army over the course of 3 months, competing against other hobbyists on the one-ring forum as we build, paint and battle our way to the finish line...

We are playing the new Hobbit SBG rule from Games Workshop. 

Month 1 

Build and paint 2 warbands, including an army leader:

Points are awarded as follows: 

 - 1 point for each hero painted on time

 - 1 point for each warband of 6+

 - 1 extra point for each full warband of 12 

(maximum 6 points)

Month 2

Expand your force to 500 points, complete with army list (name any un-named heroes) then battle your 500 point army against another gamer at the end of the month, 

Points are awarded as follows:

 - 5 points for complete a 500 point army (with army list), 

 - 3 points for a victory, 2 for a draw or 1 for a loss

(maximum 8 points)

Month 3

Paint a centre piece (monster/hero over 100 pointts).

Expand your army to 700 points with army list

Play a multi-player game at the end of the month (doubles), 

Points are awarded as follows:

 - 2 points for centre piece

 - 3 points for complete 700pt force and list

 - 5 points for victory, 3 for draw and 1 for loss

(maximum 10 points)

I will be painting the first of my challenges this month:

Warband 1:

Arvedui (Army leader)

12 x Warriors of Arnor

1 x Banner Arnor 

11 x Warriors of Arnor.

If painted on time this will give me the maximum number of points for month 1 (6 points) - then I can add Malbeth and a warband of Arnor rangers for month 2! and look at Arathorn / Aragorn and Rangers of the North or more Warriors of Arnor for month 3....

Keep an eye out as I update my progress with painting this army and how it performs in battle in Month 2.

The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game Rule Boo

This week I managed to persuade my son to finally play a game of The Hobbit SBG. It was roughly 750 points each with me leading Gothmog and 3 warbands of Morannon orc against the Army of Arnor.

We are playing the new Hobbit SBG rule from Games Workshop. 

I used a simple grey painted board with ruins in the middle.  The aim was a point for any hero/banner killed and a point for each figure on the centre rubble. Confident in my fully painted Mordor Army I set up ready to show my 9 year old son how to play - Strategy Battle Game.

Below are the pictures from the battle.  Please remember this is a starter battle and we tried to follow the basic rules without getting too tied up in details as I wanted to encourage him to play, and not put him off through boredom!

Final Thoughts

Well, I was impressed with my son ability to pick up the rules and how easily he beat me, killing a captain, shaman, wounding Gothmog and having 5 troops on the objective... I had 2 on the objective and so lost 8-2.

I loved the Arnor and really need to get round to painting them, the recent entry on to the Tale of 4 Gamers on the Onering forum should give me the opportunity to do this.

This was easy, and was never going to be in much doubt.  Aragorn was simply unstoppable!

He was easily able to handle Gothmog and any Morannon I threw at him.  i will definitely be using him in my future Arnor warbands.

So a win for Arnor and my 'new to the game' son.

LOTR: Battle Report - SBG Ambush in Rhudaur (Arnor)

Lord of the Rings battle report -  SBG Arnor vs Angmar 

So, this is the latest SBG battle report from East Grinstead Wargamers, which sees Arnor with the elven twins Elladan and Elrohir, with Halbarad with an army of Dunedain and rangers (750 points), face the might of Gulavhar, Buhrdur, shade, troll and a mass of orcs (1000 points).

The battle was similar to both Surrounded (LoME) and Ambush in Rhudaur (The Ruin of Arnor).  The idea was that the elven twins and Halbarad had been hunting elves and had stopped over night to rest at the ruins at Rhudaur. Unbeknownst to them, Gulavhar and Buhrdur had both gathered a small force to launch a counter attack at dusk to rid the Rhudaur of the Dunedaun once and for all.

We had planned for Dan (a new player) to have Buhrdur's 500 point warbands and I would have Gulavhar - Craig would defend with 750 worth of Arnor, but Dan couldn't come so I fielded the 1000 point army!  The aim was simple,  Angmar HAD to drive the good force out of the ruins or kill the vast majority, while the good had to keep the evil army from taking the ruins.

LotR SBG: Halbarad and The Arnor Army is lost, the Twins Survive, but with no might the fight is lost, Craig concedes the ruins and the Game.

Final Thoughts

Craig was unfortunate as he lost the priority roll at a crucial point, he had planned to pull everyone back into the centre and then hold the ruins while the rangers and Dunedain on the walls rained arrows on the orcs. Without that priority roll, he was swamped with Angmar orcs and was trapped - the rest was what was expected.  The sides were in Angmars favour from the start with the extra points, but Arnor simply had no chance.

I was worried about the bow fire in LotR SBG as in WotR, I could easily lose Gulavhar or Buhrdur... this meant that I held back.  Craigs bow fire was poor (and that is putting it mildly) and during my advance one flank concentrated everything on the Cave Troll, he should have been a walking pin cushion, but only sustained one wound counter!


This was the first time we had used the ruins and I agreed that if the base couldn't fit through the arch then the figure couldn't come through... 
...this meant that only my orcs could go through, the Shade, Warg, Troll and everything with a 40+mm base  had to get in through the two broken walls.


It was a good fast game and drew a lot of attention at the club, wait until we do the siege of Helms Deep!

We both agreed this had to be shared between Elrohir and Elladan the Sons of Elrond as the held the entire flank and killed everything that tried to get passed.  Yeah, they used all their might, but nothing got passed... 

I still have to get to grips with the rules so it will be interesting to pit a decent Evil hero against him and see how he likes it! And learn the rules for magic as my shaman last time literally did nothing!
